Augmented Reality Oper
In 2023, the Bayreuther Festspiele and director Jay Scheib have embarked on a globally unique undertaking: one of the most auratic performance spaces in the world, the Festspielhaus on the Green Hill, will be equipped with 330 hard-wired AR glasses, adding a completely new design dimension to the new production of Parsifal: 300 minutes of AR content will accompany and complement the most synaesthetic opera experience.
Together with video designer Joshua Higgason, Gloria Schulz and Aiden Rössler for the Studio für unendliche Möglichkeiten not only helped shape the foundations of this major challenge, but also helped design, structure and optimize the content and ensure its smooth technical implementation.
We believe that opera in particular is a genre that can benefit from digital enhancements. Just as Richard Wagner conceived the Festspielhaus as a mythical place with state-of-the-art projection technology, the infinite possibilities of digital enhancements can bring a visual and sensual richness that can be on a par with the musical experience, especially in opera today with its clear staging limitations due to the primacy of musical/acoustic perfection.
